Epc problem?

Got in my 2001 Beetle and took off to get gas. It was missing (it was fine when parked the previous night)but since my tank was pretty empty, thought I might have some condensation accumulation. Drove 6 miles to gas station. Put in gas, got back in the car and turned the key and NOTHING. Battery seems to be fine. My EPC (yellow) light and battery light stay on after the other lights go off. This was all so sudden and unexpected. Any ideas what my problem could be or even where to start checking ????
