PLEASE NEED ADVISE...Exhaust Leak...need help

I recently bought a 2001 beetle. There is an exhaust leak, but we are not sure where it is coming from. The fumes come into the car and the only time it isn't so terribly bad is when the air conditioning is on with it recirculating in the car. (not from the outside) And when you crack the windows it makes it worse. Any tips on where it could be coming from would be greatly appreciated.

Does it smell like oil burning?
The only real exhaust can come in through rear hatch seal, unless you have a hole rusted through in the rear floor area.
You probably just need a valve cover gasket, they leak oil onto the hot exhaust and the smell comes into the car. Don't ask how I know!

You can get exhaust fumes in through the vents. I know, I had it happen a few months ago. I had leaks on either side of my cat and all I could smell was exhaust unless I had the fan off and recirc button pressed.

OP - I would take the car to an exhaust shop. They will be able to track the leak down very quickly on a lift.
