Hi all, just wondering if anyone has any ideas or experience on this issue, started a few months back when my handbrake /emergency light on the dash would intermittingly dissappear then come back on when parked at the lights.Recently it has just gone altogether and now the EPC light has popped up.Got a scan done but no faults came up,guy said that a message stated that the ECU had been tampered or bypassed in the past! Checked and replaced a stop/taillight and a reg light that had just blown this week. But am confused wether to strip and replace the handbrake/brake pedal sensors and hope for the best.Just don't want to throw money down a road then find out it could be worse.Any help would be appreciated!?

This maybe a situation, where a vw specific scan tool; would be needed to read codes for this type of problem.

Seeing how you have a 1.6L, i assume you have a uk spec vehicle and some aspects of the cars electricals maybe different as a RHD vehicle. You might considor purchasing th UK spec Haynes service manual and use the correct repair info they provide to complete the repairs.

VW Beetle Petrol & Diesel (Apr 99 - 07) Haynes Repair Manual (Haynes Service and Repair Manuals)

Here is the LHD service manual for a 2002 model with a 2.0L:

#11 is the switch:

As for a scan tool; there are many "VAG" scan tools available on ebay/amazon; otherwise you might check out OBDEleven and the Ross Tech VCDS
