So Bug is getting a facelift and while I'm in there I am doing the timing belt RnR . I found the pump had the broken fin syndrome and ordered up the metal version from ECS.

To me it looks unfinished, the casting is almost closed in the fin design.These pumps don't look like they flow very much to begin with. I am opening it up with a dremel and wondered if any of you caught this issue Bart

What brand is the new pump? It doesn't look like the quality control is very good; I think I would have gotten a different one or brand. Interestingly, enough; that is one of the arguments with the plastic vs. metal impellers. Personally, I would rather go with metal any day but still this might be a interesting read:
