Front speakers not working - 2000 beetle

Ok, I'm sure the answer may be 20 pages back in this forum, but I'm going to ask.

I'm down to just the rear speakers working in my 2000 beetle. My previous beetles ('98 & ‘00) did the same thing. I din't think the stereo is anything special - it's the same stock radio with the CD player in the trunk as my other beetles.

Any suggestions on where to start (is it usually a crimped wire or a connection on the speaker that comes loose?)? I have more time than money & it'd be nice to listen to the radio without blasting out the kiddo in the back seat ;-)
