After having problems with the gear selector on my 2000 2.0 I have a question for those in the know.
The original problem was a none centring gear lever traced to the selector arm on the gearbox which controls the up and down motion, the cross shaft was very tight in the plastic bushes so after a light polish this was cured and gear lever self centres correctly.
I noticed the selector shaft was also sloppy in its housing and I would like to know if this is removable without anything dropping into the gearbox or the selector forks disengaging from the baulk rings.
The piece I would like to remove is the housing secured with two 8mm bolts and the reverse light switch screwed into the side and has the selector shaft running through the middle.
If removable I plan to ream it out and fit a phosphor bronze bush to take up the side play it has developed.

Just googled it and yes selector tower is removable and it appears to have a needle roller bearing inside so off to main dealers tomorrow
