I went to get my first oil change on my new to me 2013 Beetle 2.5 Liter, automatic, and was told I HAD TO have synthetic and the mechanic refused to do the regular oil change. I know some cars i.e. Camaros, have to have it, but can my bug have the same standards as those cares?

Yes if you want your engine to live a long happy life is is best to stick with the manufactures recommended lubricant. The 2.5L i5 engine runs hot and will eat a set of Iridium plugs that last 100K miles in most average engines in around 60K I recommend changing them at 40K mile intervals for optimum performance.
