Headlight Adjustment

Needing to adjust the aim on my wife's 1999 VW Beetle headlights. The daylight beams are not level. What is the "on center" spacing of the headlights from the VW front emblem? Also, what is the headlight height distance? I realize some advise to drive the vehicle close to the wall and mark where the center of the headlights are located. However, to me it would be easier to pre-mark the wall.
