Heater Core

So if you have a heater core leak and no moisture is found on the carpet, just where does the coolant go? Would it go out the Evaporator drain?

A sweet smell, or steam out of the hvac vents; would be a common sign of the problem. A pressure test,,is the best way; i have found, to pinpoint hard to find, coolant leaks.

I just may have an issue with they blend doors. Not sure till I get a closer look. I was mainly curious where the coolant ends up. I was thinking it would share the Evaporator drain, assuming it wasn't plugged up. Which, I made sure mine wasn't.

I think I had a small leak as I would smell moisture in the cab. The heater would also not get very hot and take quite awhile to get warm. Awhile back I added some Blue Devil coolant leak additive that seemed promising as it claimed to react differently and create a chemical seal on leaks. Anyways, both heater core hoses get hot.

I'm still also having overheating issues only at idle. Thermostat and water pump have been replaced already. I'm leaning towards two different issues. I'm thinking I need to still burp air from the coolant system and that the blend doors is missing the foam covering to seal them as I've seen in so many YouTube videos.

Thoughts?

This has been going on for quite awhile; this is a new thread (again), without the whole history of the overheating issue.

Why did you put the blue devil in originally; was there a specific cooling leak, that you were aware of? Did you pressure test the cooling system?

If you are thinking the heater core is leaking, you could bypass it and see if the smell, overheating issue goes away?

Good. video to review:

This is a new thread because it's a new problem. Previous issues were addressed by replacing the water pump and radiator thermal switch.

The Blue Devil was put in because I was pretty sure the heater core had a leak as the previous owner had it bypassed. I isolated the heater core with a pressure gauge at one end and a Schrader valve at the other. It was verified to be leaking. After the Blue Devil was applied I performed the danger test and it would hold pressure (not leaking).

The original question I posted was informational as I never found any moisture leaking inside the cab.

Well, you might review the checks shown in the video; see, if you notice anything, that indicates a problem? I usually, vacuum fill the cooling system and eliminate any possible air in the system, that way.

In a possible process of elimination; did the idle overheating issue, happen before the heater core was bypassed or after it was sealed with bluedevil, hooked back up again? As noted: if the heater core is suspect; you could by pass it again and see if things act differently?

When, you say “over heating “@ idle; how is it acting (boiling, fans kicking on, etc) and what coolant temps are being shown on a scan tool?

So far on the cooling system; what have you replaced or “fixed”:

Water pump
Thermostat
Flush/fill coolant
Sealed leaking heater core
Coolant temp sensor
Fan switch

These all have been done at some point recently:

Water pump
Thermostat
Flush/fill coolant
Sealed leaking heater core
Coolant temp sensor
Fan switch

I was getting boiling coolant if I didn't rev it up occasionally. I eventually made a burp funnel. Seemed to work so far. Last run it idled for over an hour with no issues.

Thanks for your help Billy.

So, i guess, there was air; in the cooling system? Is the heater core; still steaming, leaking or smelling? I suppose, residual leaked coolant; could cause a sweet coolant smell, inside the car?

Time will tell. I'll just have to keep an eye out on the coolant levels and any additional issues.
