Hello from Hardwick, MA, USA. Actually, I am writing this morning from Wareham, MA.

I have owned my 2001 New Beetle for about one month. I am enjoying it. It is a lot of fun to drive. I feel very comfortable in it.

It has a couple of design quirks like the placement of the 3 cupholders under the Monsoon stereo, but I am learning to cope. The back seat does not fold down flat to make the hatchback hold more. Said stereo is worn out, getting bad reception almost always.

Unfortunately, the compresser for the AC is shot, not good during summer. A real oddity is the gasoline/petrol filler. The gas pump turns off after about every 0.8 gallons. I checked with an online mechanic who said that there is no "kit" for this issue meaning the entire gas tank needs to be replaced to fix this problem. Any other suggestions?

Hello,

I also have a 2001 (for about two years now, I am the second owner) — I love it!

Regarding the back seat — you have to take off the headrests, that allows the seat to lie flat.

As for the gas — my car is also a bit touchy — but I have found that adding the gas slowly (not full force) alleviates the problem.

I never use the cup holders…so can’t comment on that — and my radio and AC are okay, so can’t help there either.

Good luck!
You first pull forward the bottom seat, with a pull tab near the middle front. Then fold that forward, and you will see two sets of two holes - these are headrest storage! Then, remove the headrests, and fold the back down. Is there another reason why you can't put it down?

And, forget about those coin hol....I mean, cup holders. Get one of those cupholders! I have pictured it. The best accessory I have installed, hands down!

Get a beverage, get comfortable, and read through this. It's gonna be enlightening!
