1999 New Beetle named Pīlīte (the duckling). Almost 200k miles, generally runs like a top. My wife reported that the steering felt weird; and when she got home Pīlīte left a fluid trail in the driveway. Oh oh. I've got the Beetle up on jack stands in the garage now. The fluid reservoir is empty, and the area around the steering boot on the passenger side is wet. I followed all of the hoses, lines, and connections, and none of them appear to be leaking. Is it time for a new steering box? How big a job is it? I searched the forums but couldn't find a "how-to".
Is this something I could tackle myself? Any special tools needed? Should I look for a used / reman / new box?
If it's too much for a shade tree mechanic like myself, who are the trusted mechanics in the Kalamazoo area?
Thanks in advance.
