Just after the first snow, I feel that there's something wrong with my 98 beetle (2.0, automatic):

There is a noise when I'm going straight ahead or turning left(The speed is around 30-40 mph), sounds like exhaust pipe is leaking, but I feel that the noise is coming from the front. And the car trembles a little. The weird thing is, when I turn the steering wheel a little bit right, the noise (and the trembling) disappears. When I turn it back, noise again!

On the other hand, my beetle shifts to 3rd gear at higher than 3000 rpm. So, when I'm in local, most of the time it travels at 2xxx rpm (around 30 mph). Is that correct?

Could you please give me some suggestions? Thanks a lot in advance!

(Please excuse my english, I'm not a native speaker.....)

Java,

Welcome to NB.Org...

First off...update your profile and let us know where you're from...

secondly...Check the power steering pump and see how much fluid you have..and do an overall hands on check of the engine compartment...make sure the airbox lid is snapped and tight, Check your vacumn hoses....and if you have a garage, scoot under with a flashlight and check the exhaust....

Thank you Bananarama, I will go check it as you suggested.

It's very cold here, and I don't have a garage, it might be difficult ......

Let me try first ~~
