Help With Engine Shake/rough idle

8777 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  red99
Hey all. Im new to these forums so I hope im posting this in the correct spot an have the correct info. Very recently my Girlfriends beetle has started shaking. it shakes at idle and gets worse while accelerating. Spark plugs were just replaced for some quick trouble shooting and the problem still persists.

Borrowed my friends Ross-Tech and i posted the information down below.
Any help pin pointing the problem would be greatly appreciated! If there is some more info that would be of use, please let me know.

Unrelated to the engine shaking but still very confusing to me is some of the codes that are pulled up. when I plug in my cheapie scanner it just comes up with the random misfire code, and shows that 3 cylinders are misfire. I reset the codes after changing the spark plugs and now it appears to show the random misfire and 2 cylinders are misfiring. The part that is confusing me is that her car does NOT have AWD, nor does it have heated mirrors. any help here would also be appreciated but is not my main concern.

Shaking and rough idle with a misfire code.

Which Beetle do you have, and what year?

If you have the 2.0 engine with the misfire code? Common fault is the coil pack. This is easy to spot most of the time. Remove the plastic engine cover and start the engine while it's dark outside. Fair chance you might see some arcing around the coil pack. This will happen most often under strain or engine load--or if you have some higher humidity. Humid air makes it easier for the spark to arc out.

If suddenly it's running great on a dryer day? You can use a spray bottle with just water. And point and shoot around the spark plugs, wires, and coil pack. If you spray an area and things get worse? That's where to look.

Yes i suppose the vehicle info would help too :p its. 2000 1.8T
Ok I will try and look for issues with the coil packs. Thanks for the tip.
Not sure if the coil pack issue would apply to yours. I think the 1.8t engine has indy coil packs. It's possible the boot may have damage, or something is causing electrical leaks.

A few others have that engine and should be along to chime in.

Coil packs are issues with the 1.8t. I would check them out for sure.

So today I tried swapping the coil packs to see what would happen. To start it was saying misfire in cylinder 2 and 4.

Swap Coil pack from Cylinder 1 and 2
-Misfire in Cylinder 1 and 2
Swap from cylinder 1 and 4
-Misfire in cylinder 3 and 4

Im not sure what to make of this, any ideas?
You should probably just go ahead and replace them all. The misfire codes are based on knock sensor readings so they shouldn't be taken too literally. There is room for error in how the ECU interprets the readings.
