I joined this web site trying to find a good home for my 2000 NB. We have a little girl, she is 9 months old and my wife has a hard time getting her in-and-out of a rear facing car seat. So we decided to get a 4 door sedan, something like a Jetta. I also posted a $40.00 ad on cars.com. It has been a nightmare! People calling and asking to come pick up the car for $5,000. They don't even want to take a look at it first! Just "..come with cash and get it..."
I wanted a bug since I was 16 years old. I never got to have one, until I was 35, two years ago. I wanted a car so I can go to work and park it at the airport for 2-3 days and don't have to worry about it. I picked up this one from a MBZ dealership on a whim. I wanted the 1.8L motor, but at that time I knew nothing about this website, I just needed an inexpensive ride to work. The yellow color grew on me, and did absolutely nothing to the car until a few days ago.
I took it off the market ans we decided to keep it! I spent 3 hours last night reading Yelojkt's posts and I was so inspired that I felt guilty for trying to get rid of mine. It has been so good to us, gas and insurance, that's all I had to do and now some @#$* wants me to drop my pants and say "Thank you Sir!"
Marvin's dad, Fowvay, nor, Basher, Growler CyberGreenBaby, BillsBug, you all made me see things from a different prospective. Your love and passion for this little car is truly amazing. You are great teachers, you have a vast amount of knowledge and I appreciate all of your help. Today I just got of the phone with ECS and ordered a few things: T-Belt kit, plugs, wires, Fuel Filter, K&N, antifreeze, and interior filter. Last week I got brand new Michelin Pilot's from Sam's Club, my sway bar drop link was making a noise, thought my CV's were going bad, but thank God it was only the link, $35.00 from the stealership, next is a suspension kit from Autotech and then I want to get killerbab's Aristo's.
We grew up in the back seat of an Opel Cadet...my daughter will fit in the back seat of a Beetle.
Thank you all of you for your hard work. Happy Holidays to all of you!

That's really awesome. I always saw myself driving a NB since the concept model came to be. I had the fever early. You appear to have caught it late, but late still means you caught it. Congrats. I wish i was doing performance upgrades. Ahhh...can't wait for July...

Hammer,

I think you'll be happy with your decision, these little cars are very good and take care of their owners. I could never part with mine. I think that you'll find your daughter will enjoy the car, and the memories with it. I know that I wish my parents had a Beetle when I was a kid!

Cheers and Merry Christmas!

I second that! Kids LOVE Beetles! What kid doesn't do Punch Buggy or Slug Bug? I wish my mom had a Beetle back in the day. That crummy old Plymouth she had was....not very cool. We drive a cultural icon. How many others can say that?? :D

Hammer, that's such a great story! I'm glad that your friends here were able to help you decide on keeping your Bug. There are worse cars, for getting children out of the back. These seats open wide, and, I think, are made for easy access. I think that if you had sold it, you would be missing it right now. ;)

I don't think you'll regret your choice. There is no other car like it on the road!

Welcome to the Org! :wave2:

Hey Hammer I'm glad to see that you have decided to keep your NB and make the best of it. My wife and I did the same thing kinda. A short while after we got married I bought a 66 bug from a friend. I lowered it custom painted my wheels and engine tin to match, daul baby dellortos, stinger exhaust, and dee engineering seats. No rear seat. When our first son was 3 years old and my wife was pregnant with our second child, we drove that bug to a Rocky Mountain Motorworks show near pikes peak. I screwed the carseat down to the plywood carpeted area in back. Alot of things went wrong on that trip but we enjoyed every minute of it, and to this day that trip stands at the top of my most favorites. But that car was wrecked and we got started in the going from one new car to another. Until I found Yelojkt. And even though we were not ready to buy we went ahead and got him. After having him for two years but always having another car (big enough to hold our kids safely and comfortably) my wife broke down and bought herself a NB. Our kids have never complained. I am glad to see that you have decided to keep your car and also to do your own repair work. Good luck with your yellow NB and may your family have many happy miles in it.:)

My dad had about 3 beetles when I was growing up. I remember one time when I was little I was riding around in one of them with him and my uncle and our black lab and we got into an accident. It wasnt too bad. We were all fine cuz we were wearing our seatbelts but the dog freaked out. As soon as my dad opened his door to get out and check on me the dog took off into the woods. Poor thing. It took them an hour to find him cuz it was dark and the dog was blacker than black! He was so close to us the whole time and never moved but we couldnt even see him.
My dad also used to restore VW buses with my uncle at his house. I would sit and watch them for hours. Welding, sanding, priming, painting. They'd give me my own respirator and goggles (which both were 5 sizes too big on me) To this day I associate the smell of primer and paint with VW buses. They would also buy old bugs that were rotted beyond repair and take the body off and turn them into dune buggies and we would take them out into the dunes by my uncles house and ride around for hours at a time.
My other Aunt and Uncle had a cream colored diesel rabbit that I absolutely loved. I never knew why but I loved the sound of that car. I loved riding in it too. Aside from all of my dad's OB's I thought that car was the coolest. After a while my dad stopped buying beetles and my aunt and uncle sold their rabbit and my other aunt and uncle divorced so the bus restorations stopped. And I started to forget about all those cool things...then the NB came out and I flipped! I wanted one so bad! One of my friends in Florida had one and I wanted to hang out with her all of the time just so I could be around her red NB. I never thought I would be able to have one. I was wrong and I am sooooo glad!! :D

On the topic of kids and beetles....

my partner's neice told me that there is a mother at her school who has 4 kids and they are not rail thin :) Two boys and three girls. She piles them all plus bookbags in a Sundown Orange 2003 hardtop! They're mostly highschool, and she said she's glad one is about to get her own car.. but she said the bug does it amazingly well!

My aunt and uncle had a lot of old beetles. I never really knew them, but I do remember seeing their blue one at a family reunion what seems eons ago. My neighbors down the street had a black 73 (which is odd since it looks factory black, but factory black stopped in 67 I thought), and my mom said my first word was beeble (hehe) and that I'd chase their car down the street if i was outside. I always liked them, I guess because they were unlike all the other cars. I don't know, perhaps it was the chirp. But I just remember falling in total love. When I got my first OB, and only OB to date, I was also in love. Still love to drive that car, too. When the new beetle came out in 1998.... i told mom some day, some how I'd have a green one. Six years later... I bought one, and all on my own too!!! :D

The more I read your responses, the more I am glad with our decision to keep the bug! Thank you all of you for your great stories! Our first car growing up was a 1962 white Opel Cadett with light green interior...993cc with 40hp. I learned how to drive just by watching my dad driving. One day I was 13 I said, "Dad, I know how to drive" he look at me and smiled and next thing I know we were pulling on to side of this dirt road. He opened his door, comes to my side, opens my door and said: "Show me..." 40hp on gravel will spin...and spin...and spin...I still can feel how red my face was. I was able to put it together cause I knew he was watching me, put in second, then third, then fourth. We drove for 10 minutes, he told me to pull over and that was it! I remember him talking to mom saying that I just drove the car for the first time and she just couldn't believe it! My mom to this day she has never driven a car...
My brother was always sitting behind him, I was behind my mom and our little sister in the middle. My brother would look at the on coming cars and would say their names just by looking at the shape of their headlights...Opel ascona, fiat 124, Alfa romeo sprint, ford escort Opel manta, fiat 131, julieta...His son is 4 and guess what is he doing? The same thing! Our license plate number was 181-424, we had an 8 track and just heat...
Thank you for bringing back those memories! Dad passed away in '92 everyone else is still on the island, we visit 2-3 times a year and hoping to retire there one day! Merry Christmas to all of you or as we say "Καλλα Χριστουγεννα":)

SWEET. :)

It's a great fun car. But yeah, it'll keep you busy. I dunno if I should be happy that my experiences have helped convinced you. Or if I should wave you off the future of tinkering a tool purchasing. ;)

I dunno... it's weird. It's all about the love really. I love my car, and so I don't really mind working on it from time to time. I had to replace a water pump on my wife's car (buick) though, and while it's an easy process (MUCH easier than ours) it was just not NEARLY as enriching of an experience.

Good luck with it. I hope it treats you well. And don't worry, kids grow up fast; she'll be able to get into the car all by herself in no time.

The "Dad, I know how to drive" story rocks, today's gonna be a good day; thanks. :)

Thats a cool story Hammer! I do that same thing now! although nowaydays its harder as the headlights on the newer cars are starting to look alike so it's more of a guessing game than really knowing it what it is...but I can always tell when its a beetle!! :goodjob: People get annoyed with me because wherever I am whenever I see a beetle...old or new I'll just yell out "BEETLE!" It doesnt matter if someone is in the middle of saying something or not I just blurt it out...even if I see one on TV. I can pick em out anywhere..I never miss a beetle.

Hammer, I'm glad that you kept your NB and didn't go the mini-van route. I've known plenty of people who have and when I read a story like yours, it makes my day. I have five kids (3 teenagers, 1 pre-teen, and a 5 yr. old), and all except my daughter love my NB. I use to play the "name that car" game as well when I was a kid, but nowadays like CGB said, they all look alike. Good luck with all the mods and welcome!

I am so glad to be back... Long story short, the yellow bug was sold shortly after this post, my wife developed post-par-tum arthritis and it was extremely hard to handle the car seat. We got an 04 Mazda 3s 5 door, kept it until two months ago, and on last Saturday we got a Reflex Silver 06 with 22000 miles and pack #2 (48 mo ext warranty and also lo-jack from a very cool lady that changed life style)The girls are old enough now to get into the car seat by them selves.:)
