So I saw a 2000 glx for a deal and all it needed was a turbo.. I really meant to buy it for my wife so I could stop working on her Saturn vue.. But I made the mistake of driving it. In the 16 miles it took me to get home it had became my car.

Also anyone got a for dummies check list on this car? So far I am replacing the turbo and the wiper switch.. Tips and trick welcome. :)

You should have never driven it. We all made that mistake! :wink2:

If you do not have service records, I would get the timing belt and water pump replaced! If they have not been done, you are driving on borrowed time. Better safe than sorry.

Now is the time to find a local independant watercooled VW shop. Check Yelp reviews, and make one your friend!

One more thing....get comfortable, grab a beverage and peruse this!

Thanks. I been thinking that I should change it just because its at 149k... and I hate having water pumps go out in the middle of no where. And I have never been to a shop. I been spinning wrenches since 83. Not saying I am good at it but I do enjoy being covered in blood and grease. :)
Welcome from Texas!
THank you from washington. :)
Mighty glad to have you with us! Congrats on being bitten by the bug. Good to see a beetle in the hand of a wrench turner!

Ya it needs a little work.. but she will be mint soon enough. And thanks. :)
Welcome to the ORG, it's not so much the water pump you need to be worried of, it's the timing belt. With that many miles, and without records to know if it's been changed, if the timing belt breaks, you'll be down and out when the valves touch the pistons as these are interference engines. No sense in taking a chance and then looking at a steep repair bill once it breaks.

That is good to know. I did order a kit last night and plan on putting it on next week. But hey if it did happen what a great excuse to do a port and polish.. just saying. :)
