How tough a job is it to claen the throttle body?

Can you take out the air filter and squirt some carb cleaner or injector cleaner in the intake to clean it?

Yes, you can use a spray cleaner. It will not do as good a job as removing the throttle body and cleaning it. A gentle cleaning with a soft toothbrush and cleaner is a good way.
A good spray cleaner is the MoPar cleaner available at your local Dodge dealer. It will also clean out some of the carbon from the combustion chamber.

Thanks - I will give it a shot today. New beetles must be the hardest car in the world to work on. Just taking the cover off the air filter is a major accomplishment.

I'll be doing this just as soon as my replacement injectors come in. I'll take pictures and stuff.
Curious if y'all have anymore info.
