I just got a 98 Beetle for $100. bucks, just need to switch out the oil cooler and do a few odds and ends. The only key it came with works to start the car, open the glovebox, and open the trunk. It is, however, missing the round VW button (see pic). So is this key just a light, or is it a keyless entry key?

Car does have power locks but how do I get a transmitter if it does have keyless entry? How do I even find out it has it?

All of the New Beetles had keyless entry from the factory. The key that you have; it the "valet" key and didn't have the built in key fob wireless features.

Check out this vendor; for purchasing new keys, having keys cut and programming your new keys.

Note: because your car is a 1998; it did not have the built in immobilizer, so that aspect of the car, does not need to be programmed.

Thanks for the info! I'm going to try to upgrade to the flip key while I'm at it. Thanks again! :)

The 98 NB didn't have the flip key. It had a key like that with a separate remote.

This looks like the original style seperate wireless remote; you might ask fixmyvw.com and see if they have something that is compatible.

Here is a aftermarket compatible version:

This thread; seems to indicate, that people have been able to get a later style switchblade key fobs to program on a 1998.
