I don't suppose that there is a way to totally replace the beetle headlight with something simpler?

(What would MacGuyver do?)

The lights are really not that bad. It just takes a lot of patience, a lot of cleaning of the headlight rails....

We've had ours in and out a few times, and I've found that just by moving extra slow and deliberate..things can go in/out pretty easy.

That being said? The inside of the headlight is pretty complex with a set of gears and pivots. Unless a company came up with something direct "plug and play"? There's not really a way modify things.

What about a headlight bucket size to fit inside the cylinder the stock headlight uses?

Have a headlight lense that is recessed and vertical (sort of like the old 1960-66 VW Beetles) but using a modern bulb?

Or one like the old Porsche 911's, where the lower part of the housing jutted out to meld in with the shape of the fender?
This bug is currently for sale on Craigslist and it has some interesting tricks! Perhaps you could reach out to him for some answers. I for one would like to know how plastic fenders are modified !

Here's another add (possibly the same car) where the owner comments on the headlights.

"Beetle has custom veilside wide body kit, moulder ft and rear. The lower side skirts have been moulder and extended to help recreate the Retro 60's look. 1959 headlights, adapted to h.I.d. The rear taillights are from a 1962 beetle."
