Q: What the hell is this? I hear you cry.
A: Well, I'll tell ya.

It's The Insane Beetle Tour 2015

Friday morning, June 19th 2015, a group of silly and dedicated explorers will depart the parking lot at the Art Institute of Chicago and head down historic Rt.66. in water cooled Beetles. We will work our way southwest on Rt.66 until we get to Santa Rosa New Mexico.

Q: Why there? Good Question.
A: That is where we break from the "Mother Road" and head down to Roswell. That's right, IBT2015 will stop at and participate in the 2015 version of Return to Roswell! We will hang out there and do the aliens! (extra-terrestrial, not illegal)

Q: Then What?

A: Sunday or Monday morning depending on the show's schedule we will head back up to Santa Rosa NM and head west on Rt.66. Finally ending up in Santa Monica, gawking at the ocean, the end of the road.

Or so it would seem. The portion of "CB" (Crazy Brave) Beetle owners that came from the east coast get to drive back from Los Angeles to Florida. We will probably going the southern route through Texas. We honestly haven't decided yet.

Q: Why?
A: Why Not?

Q: Why Then?
A: Affords us the opportunity to hook up in Roswell.

Q: Won't it be hot in the summer?
A: Yes

Q: How far is it? Won't it be expensive?
A: For me it will be 6,000 miles, and Yes.

Q: Again Why?
A: See answer #1.

In all seriousness, this is not a trip for the faint hearted. If you can't sit in a Beetle for days at a time without killing your partner, you may not want to do the whole thing. Nurse Diesel and I enjoy long boring Beetle adventures. If anyone want's to join in all the way from Florida feel free. We would love the company. If you live along our route and want to join us for a part of the adventure, that's great as well. None of us are getting any younger and if we don't do this now we may never get the chance again.

That's why we are going to do it.

Let me know if you are interested.

I'd love to do that, but I'd have to wait until I retire. At my job, you can only take one week off at a time...:(
Love your post, great sense of humor!

Yes yes yes, I will be at Roswell next year, and want to join you for the sojourn back to SoCal. I've already communicated with you on FB The Collective, and will be following your plans there and here.

"None of us are getting any younger and if we don't do this now we may never get the chance again." Love this, so true!

Can't wait!

Fun Fun Fun

Sounds like fun Carolyn. We are looking forward to the western part as much as the midwest route. We lived in Flagstaff and I drove Rt.6 everyday going to work in Williams. Williams was the last town to be officially bypassed by 66 and they have all sorts of museums and tacky tourist stuff there to wander around in.

I know of two other Beetles that may be doing the whole thing with us so we wouldn't be "Alone Crazy". We would be "Group Crazy"!
Groovy!

Dave, That looks like a Groovy ap for Garmin. I will be replacing mine soon as my current Garmin was almost useless on the way to TOD this year. It lost it's signal over half the time and when we got home it said we had driven over 112,500 something miles!

I have a mind blowing app on the iPad for Rt.66 already. Even still my next Garmin will have a memory card slot so I can put cool stuff like this in it.

With that and all the other "Trons" I will have in Manfred I might need to install another alternator for this trip! Already thinking about building a Marvin trailer.

Chuckie,
I went to Williams and the Grand Canyon last year after the AZ 66 cruise. So cute and tacky!

Group Crazy is better than Alone Crazy! That's what us NB fanatics are all about!

Williams and Beyond

Williams is a cool town. I used to work for the Grand Canyon Railway years ago and got to have lunch on the South Rim every day. Love that area of the country. Can't wait to explore all the little side roads Rt.66 takes through some of those old ghost towns.

I just put a 64 GB memory card in my camera so I can get about 6,400 pictures on it! I hope that's enough!

Bump de Bump de Bump

Achtung! Achtung! Achtung!

365 days until the IBT2015.

This is your one year warning.

That is all.

This sounds like an absolute blast! This journey is on my bucket list! I partially crossed it of last fall when coming home from Talimena. I hopped 66 from Joplin and followed it all the way to Rolla! I seen Garys Gay Parita - A Sinclaire Gas Station, Hookers Cut...BEAUTIFUL!

There are spots where you need to follow signs, and sometimes there are a sign to the original alignment, and one for a newer alignment! It can be confusing, especially if you dont have a 66 guide book! Ha!

Also, if you want to get your ear talked off about the Mother Road talk to Gary at Gary's Gay Parita! Boy can he talk!

I am with ya Chuckie. I will planning for this, and following along!
Counting Down

254 day Bump.

Time to start saving pennies for the trip!

Chuckie
Whoops!

Correct you are! I was only off by 100 days. This damn Dyslexia I have. Fought with it my whole life. I can read fine but typing is a n impossibility.

Anyway, here is the map of the silly trip we are taking.

Epic VW journey :) You're going to have a blast.
Oh Yeah.

Thanks Gary,

We are really looking forward to this journey.

So much so we are planning on doing an IBT up the eastern seaboard the following year. That will be IBT2016 US-1. We will go from Key West Fl. to Fort Kent Maine and go across the border into Canada for a beer! That makes it an "International Event"!

Have been thinking of starting a production company to promote the trips! IBP inc. Insane Beetle Productions will handle the schedules and promotional tours this organization will conduct.

We also are looking at a charity to support and raise money for. Possibly the American Heart Assoc. we honestly haven't decided as of yet.

So, as you can see, we are busy. Hopefully we can find a way to make all this fly and have a ton of fun as well.

More excitement!

After this mornings Bugs 4 Breakfast we may be picking up two, count em, TWO more Beetles for the IBT in June of next year! it looks like we are tentatively up to 4 rounds and one square for the trip down Rt66 to Roswell! What a crazy event this is going to be!

If you are interested in running with us for part or all of the journey, feel free to contact me and I will fill you in on this once in a life time trip. We are doing it while it's still there. America is disappearing before our eyes. Three weeks to see what may be gone one day is so worth it to me.

Who else want's to go?

340 days until we leave Chicago and venture down the "Mother Road"
Dunno

We looked all over for him there and never found him.

Must be busy in a book somewhere.

Possibly Geoffry and Jessica and also Ray may join us in June.

What an insane trip this may turn into!

Chuckie
Just so you know.......

For those of you who think we are crazy for attempting this, I humbly submit:

'Top Gear' begins Route 66 trip this week » Route 66 News Route 66 News

Thank you very much!
