I have been having a hard time starting car( turning ig switch)for quite awhile.
At this point I'am getting concerned I might break the key off in the Ig switch which would be a small disaster.
Now My question is what part or the whole switch do I replace?...I do not have an electrical problm just a mechanical problm physically starting (turning key)....Thnx in advance....

Hey, describe the actual problem; is the key tumbler hard to turn (binding) and/or is the steering wheel, hard to unlock, as well?

We have seen a number of members; have steering lock issues on the later model new beetles (2006-2010; they redesigned the steering wheel lock) and this causes a binding issue, that makes it hard to turn the key, unlock the steering wheel.

Others have had to giggle the key and the steering wheel; in an effort, to get it to unlock and then, let you turn the key.

Replacement of the steering column lock; seemed to to be the fix. Aside from that, there is the key tumbler and the electrical switch portion. If you order the key tumbler, from vw by your vin number; then, you can use the original key. They match it to your original key cut and vin.

I have 2002 and the key cylinder was binding; i replaced the cylinder and the electrical switch (which springs things back) and it made a huge difference. The key tumbler was worn from daily use and the switch was worn out as well. The switch was cracked, binding and the spring back action was weak.

So, I would just go ahead, replace the lock, key tumbler and the electric switch: that should do the trick.

Re:ignition Switch 08 bug

BillyM...Thnx so much for the info...It makes sense to me.
So you think replacing everything should be done...Can you clarify the parts you said & what they are?
Lock....Key tumbler.....switch...I'am sure my key switch part is ok but the locking pin in steering wheel is hanging things up...So can I buy this as one assembly? All the parts you recomended...thnx agian big guy.......

Hey, here are the parts; that I found, looking on: https://parts.vw.com/

You would need to confirm; by having your vw dealer, look up the parts with your vin #; to make sure, you get the right parts (e.g. manual trans, auto trans, etc). From what I can tell; the ignition switch, comes preinstalled with the ignition lock housing and so, you wouldn't need to buy that seperately.

The reason, I say to "replace everything"; is the amount of time and labor, to get in there, is somewhat involved, you have to remove the airbag, tear the column apart and all the parts are probably worn anyway. Do it all at once and everything would be new and hopefully; this would provide you with trouble free use of the key, for the foreseeable future. Do it once and do it right; don't set yourself up for failure or create a situation, where you leave the possibility, that you need to do a "do over", just because you overlooked, replacing one of the parts. You will save yourself time, effort, brain damage and money, in the long run.

Good, let us know; how thing work out, as you move forward with your repairs. There are also cheaper sources for parts online; sometimes, it is worth paying the extra money and work with your local vw dealer. However, there are many vw dealers thy sell parts online; at discounted prices.
