My stock SMIC had a crack on top and I had to replace it. The only SMIC available for our New Beetle is the one from Tyrolsport. The Eurojet, Boost Factory, etc will not fit. The outlet angle on them are incorrect and are design for the Golf. That's too bad because they're a bit cheaper. Anyway, the following the pictures are as follows: stock, comparison and Tyrolsport installed. It was a fairly straightforward install. I had to dremel the IAT hole a bit to make sensor fit in it. I also had to bend a bracket back to make the SMIC fit better.

Yeah, the IC is very large compared to the stock unit. I'm happy to report the seat of the pants improvements have been dramatic. :D I'm a happy camper. :) I'm gonna try to make some ducting this weekend. The stock ducting shroud is too small and doesn't fit in it. Even so, it's been a very nice upgrade. I believe this unit also works for the 1.8T crowd too.

The SMIC was designed on a 1.8T New Beetle. Specifically, it was designed on my car ;)

You're not really going to notice a power increase, maybe a slight one, but you will keep your power when it gets hot out and when you're driving for long periods of time. My car has felt exactly the same in all weather, all driving conditions, all times of the year.

It isn't cheap, but Tyrolsport has been the only company that has addressed the need for a NB-specific upgraded intercooler solution. I know how much time and effort went into this product firsthand, so I know that this SMIC was not just thrown together.

Good luck with it!

Ditto, another 1.8t guy who has the same SMIC. After numerous track day's, I can say with 100% confidence that this is the real deal.

Enjoy it, and don't scare the little kids with it too bad...;)

Great! i was wanting one of these before I ungraded the turbo to VNT 17 on my TDI NB! I saw one thread where the guy said he had to remove the front end to get the SMIC installed properly. Looks like you found that is NOT the case.

Superb!

Actually, I did have to remove (move) the bumper. There isn't enough room to jiggle it in there and connect the proper hoses and stuff. This SMIC is really beefy and makes the stock unit look wimpy. :)

Edit: I filled up today and got 50.1mpg on the last tank, 75% highway and 25% city. Before replacing the SMIC and the original SMIC cracked, this driving would typically net me about 48mpg. I'm happy and confident to say that I gained a couple mpg with this SMIC. :)
