I have a '99 Beetle, a few days ago I tried starting up my car and at the same time I flipped my key to start it up- I heard a snap from inside... And it got stuck on battery position- meaning my odometer and headlights were on. I was still able to take my key out of the ignition and heard the snapping noise it would make when it was released. So I ended up having to get it towed and I had to unplug my battery because even with the key out- my battery was being used because the snap from within left it in that mode. Hope It was clear!

SO I ended up needing a new ignition switch and the housing. They also had to send me a custom ignition switch from Germany to fit my key. Cost about $400 from getting parts from dealer and having a mechanic fix it.
