For the last 20 years I have driven too fast and used k40 RADAR detectors. I have had all 5 portable dash mount models they have produced. Once, back in 2000 I bought a top of the line Escort and tested it side by side with the current k40. The results were amazing! The k40 simple warned me at greater distances than the Escort period. Quote me whatever magazine you wish or whoever's review. My k40 was a better detector by far in real world driving on the highways around North Florida and North Carolina.

Fast forward a few years. My current model k40 was the RD850. It boasted amazing range but there was a problem. For some reason it started to give me false alerts. This happened mainly around larger metropolitan areas and then more often on rural interstates. My k40s have easily saved me from over $50,000 worth of speeding tickets over the years so you can imagine how heart broken I was to start losing confidence in Jeff. (Yes I even named him!)

The crazy part was all my friends RADAR detectors were doing this as well although not as frequently.

I called k40 finally. I spoke to Brian. Funny thing about k40, they WANT you to call them. They assign you a customer care consultant. He’s yours! You buy a RADAR detector from them and you get a thank you letter from your consultant with his card in it and a number where you can reach him if you have any questions. He also calls and checks on you. I have spoken to my k40 consultant more this last month than my Dad!

Anyway, Brian explained to me that all the new collision avoidance systems in the higher end Audi, Mercedes, Cadillac etc. vehicles were running RADAR frequencies very close to the police RADAR bands and that most of the good RADAR detectors would pick them up and report them as false alerts. My 850 was reporting them more often and at greater distance due to it’s higher sensitivity.

Just great. He also told me 5 months ago that there was nothing I could do about it for now.

That seemed like a funny thing to say. You would think a representative of a company would try to get you to buy their current product, the RL100, I didn’t feel pressured, but I had a hunch there was something coming down the road from them I might be interested in.

There was.

The first week of February k40 announced on their web page their next generation of dash mounted RADAR detectors and these are special! VERY SPECIAL! k40 has figured out how to filter out the spurious RADAR signals (K-Band and Ka-Band frequencies) from all these new cars without losing any of the detectors sensitivity to regular police RADAR. Sure I could just drive around in “CITY MODE” with my old detector but that was just limiting the reception gain on it. That left me with less than maximum protection.

I was skeptical, at first but relying on my years of experience with these people I decided to pull the trigger and get one. The one year ticket guarantee also is amazing. If you get a speeding ticket anytime for a year after purchase of their product they will reimburse you for it. No questions asked. The only caveat being it has to say RADAR on the ticket and it can’t be in a school zone or given while driving under the influence. Who else in this business has the stones to offer that?

So I ordered one. And it is AMAZING!

Yes Amazing and I tested it against my older k40 just to make sure. Here is my short review and test results.

I just tested my brand new RD950 vs my older RD850. The 950 didn't false in the 60 mile Interstate 95 test run from North Jacksonville to Georgia. The 850 false alerted 3 times. Later, the 950 went off and the 850 didn't. A quarter mile further the 950 went off again on Ka band. Still nothing on the 850. A half mile later the 950 is going berserk and the 850 finally comes to life. A mile later I run through the RADAR speed trap at 70mph (the speed limit). I could have slowed down from 90mph with the 850 in time but the extra 30 seconds warning from the 950 was fantastic! What an awesome detector! I'm going to have to get used to how much farther away this detector alerts me. I was going to give the 850 to my wife, but after today I am going to have to get her a 950 as well! Thanks for an amazing product and a special thanks to my K40 consultant Brian for talking me through the purchase."

One interesting point. You can’t buy a k40 at Best Buy or Walmart. You have to go through one of their authorized dealers. They do have some on-line retailers that they use and that’s what I did as I got mine 4 days after they were announced and the local dealers here in town weren’t even aware that the new product was out. Your k40 personal consultant can point you where to get one. I used abt in Illinois for mine.

If you have gotten a ticket in the last year or two, I would strongly recommend that you look at k40’s website. k40.com. They are simply amazing and they stand behind their product.

I would have posted this in the review section but I don't seem to have the privileges to do so.

No Sweat

I paid $299.00 for my RD950. The RLS2 is $399.00.

I bought mine from abt in Chicago. An authorized online retailer. They had free shipping but I paid the up charge to get it overnight.

Goto k40's webpage or better yet call and talk to one of there folks on the k40 consultant line. They are very friendly and will answer any questions you have. Tell em I sent ya! (Just to say hello. I get nothing from it)
