or, use the part number (starting with 5K0 - molded in the battery compartment most likely) on your existing key to order a VW Genuine 'Keyless Entry Transmitter' UnCut, UnProgrammed from parts.vw.com. They will tell you that a title is needed - that is true if you want a 'working' key. You want a generic key - should be <$100 no proof-of-ownership in that case. Then have any local locksmith cut the blade. If the VW dealership does all the work it about $300.
OTH: If you only want a backup key and are not worried about the remote lock/unlock/trunk/panic features - then order from VW a 'valet key'. It has the start-enable chip embedded in the plastic head - the key blade can be cut by any decent locksmith. Call around - the mobile ones often have the most 'automobile' key knowledge.
In my city in Arkansas, it cost me $20 for a new key blade only, part and labor. The blade will only unlock the doors/trunk so you have access. It will turn on the ignition. But the car will not stay running after starting.
