I have two New Beetles in my life, both 2002 TDi

One of them has the following oddity (as I see it) and is a Danish vehicle.

With both doors and the boot (trunk) locked and the car alarmed I can open the boot with the remote control, but when it does this it also opens the passenger door too.

I don't see why this would be a design feature so wonder if anyone knows what this defect is caused by

To eliminate a few things - the door locks otherwise work just fine. I have never proved that the alarm is ever armed. The alarm does not go off wrongly.
When the passenger door is opened in this way, then the interior light comes on.

There is the risk that on opening the boot, closing it, and walking away that the car is left open and the alarm disarmed.

Hypotheses welcome!
