Hi! My young cousin bought my 2002 New Beetle Turbo 1.8 L (Snap Orange beautiful she & I love) one year ago and now it's broken down in Fall Branch, Tenn. She is also close to Kingsport, Johnson City and Bristol. A local mechanic diagnosed a broken water pump and timing belt. The beetle has not performed well during the colder months in 2018 or 2019. However, this mechanic does not work on VWs himself and couldn't recommend one. I called dealers, club members and private mechanics here in south Florida where I reside, but none have come through with knowing someone in that area. If you can recommend a quality, reasonably-priced repairman for my cousin, she and I would greatly appreciate it! The name of company, mechanic, address and/or phone number would all help. THANK YOU!

I'm 100 miles to the east near Williamsburg, KY. I'm a private individual that maintains a few VWs for friends. I've done Timing Belt changes on numerous TDI engines (diesels) and a few New Beetle gassers with the 1.8T engine. It's likely the plastic impeller on the water pump shaft is slipping when the coolant gets up to operating temp. I've seen this happen on several occasions.

I have no means to come get the car or would I want to travel that far to investigate.
They are listed as TDI mechanics, but many work on gas cars as well so worth a look. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Lucw8ALCkLtt79MMw9JOG1E_dX57-raBhbhIFdtHnEQ/edit?hl=en_US

You also may want to see if there is a local VW group on Facebook. Seems to be the place a lot of people are getting advice from for local mechanics. There is also the NewBeetle.org Collective page on Facebook and I know we have some people who live in your area who can probably point you in the right direction as well.
Hi AndyBees:

THANK YOU kindly for responding. Too bad you are so far away. We still appreciate the input. Good luck to you (and her)!
Dear SmileyBug:

My cousin and I SO appreciate your responding. You have some great ideas we should've thought of, however didn't know about TDI mechanics. I am forwarding your message to her and she may find some good luck in her area. THANK YOU AGAIN!
