What would cause a leaks from behind the timing belt tensioner pulley? I have the covers and mount off to get to the water pump and checked underneath while water was poured in it came flowing out from behind that tensioner pulley. I had no signs of head gasket issues. Oil is still fine and there was no smoke
From exhaust before it stopped running.

My first guess would be the water pump shaft seal with water pouring out the water pump weep hole?

This is the first thing that comes to mind.

What engine are we dealing with here? 1.8t or 2.0?

It's a 2.0. Where is the weep hole for he water pump? When we pour water in you can clearly see it coming out from behind the tensioner pulley almost as quickly as you put it in

What about a freeze plug? Do these cars have one in that area

There is no freeze plug. Could be the head gasket, though. The tensioner is right over the head/block joint. See the .pdf file in message #268 of this thread (picture with water pump pulley labeled):

Well for sure at least on my engine there was a freeze plug right behind the pulley. Took pulley and found it. Water pump was also trashed. Putting it bCk together tomorrow and we shall see how it goes
