Driving today, I stepped on the brakes, and a yellow what looks like a brake setup appeared on the lower right of the dash.
Am I correct in assuming, (being as it's not red), that it means brake pads are worn?
I can only assume it'd be the fronts.
Pretty complicated little machines for that age (2002), where it has brake pad warning indicators.

thanks in advance for any advice/thoughts/knowledge.

Yep. Just telling you to replace your brakes soon.

if you just clip the wires, and twist them together, the ecu sees a continuous loop (just like they weren't worn), and the light shuts off.

the ecu watches it as a continuous ground, when the pads wear, the wire is worn thru and the ground is broken, and the light pops on.
