One month ago, I purchased a used 2004 New Beetle Turbo S Convertible and tried to familiarize myself with all of its gadgets. A problem happened with the locking mechanism on the center-console compartment. The lid does not open anymore and with the wheel anti-theft adapter locked inside, it could become critical issue. First, I tried out the lid lock while the lid was open. No problem, but after having closed the lid again and turned the key, the lock did not release the mechanism. What could be done - without destroying the lock ? Thank you for your reply.

Not aware of their ever being a turbo s convertible; that being said, if it is a actual lock tumbler.... a locksmith might be able to get inside it. On another note; you could also get a new wheel anti-theft adapter from the parts dept of your local vw dealer (about $20 or so). I just ordered one: as I have lost mine, there are/were quite a few different ones; they took a VW wheel lock tool set in a plastic case... out to the car to match it up and they were able to id it, order me a new one.

If I remember correctly, the armrest (lid) must be slid fully to the rear for the lid to open. It's been several years since my 03NBC too!
