I hope this is the appropriate place for this kind of topic

I have many things I need to ask, but this is at the top of my list.
I am wondering if anybody else feels a kind of "guilt" when they being their Bug to the mechanic. If that's not a common thing, I can try to explain what I mean.

I know the set up of a new beetle is way different and more complicated than other cars. I get it. But I'm tired of feeling stupid when bringing it into the shop to even get the smallest of repairs. I have gone to three different mechanics in my area and all three have told me how much of a terrible experience it is to fix my car. One even told me it'll be worth more if I drive it off a cliff and collect insurance. Hearing these things makes me upset because I love my car. I also feel like it's stupid to complain to a customer because I'm already paying them, so what's the big problem. I already know it's harder to fix and may cost more. I don't need to be told a million times to the point that I have thought about selling my dream car just to please the guys who fix it up.

Well, I think; because most "mechanics" don't specialize in Volkswagens/German cars; they are scared off, do not know the cars enough to fix them correctly or just have a attitude towards them, based on their history working on them, do not like them. It takes time, effort, the right scan tools and experience, to get "good" working on these cars. If they are not experienced enough with them; they can spend allot of time, working on them, lose money trying to figure out what is wrong and get aggravated, angry... this can cause them to have a anti new beetle/Volkswagen attitude. Having worked on the New Beetle, Golf/Rabbit and Jetta, I will say that the New Beetle has the mechanicals stuffed in tighter in its body and because of this, are more of a challenge to work on. It can be a HUGE challenge; to find a mechanic, that is competent, you can trust and actually can FIX what you need done, on your car without draining you of all your money, in your bank account! I had such horrendous "repair" experiences at my local Volkswagen dealer; when my car was under warranty, that I have taken over all of my repairs since then. I know; this is not feasible for everyone but I got so fed up with poor service to my car, I took control... bought the Ross Tech VCDS scan tool and started repairing everything myself. This is a drastic and not necessarily rational way to go but that is what I did! :)

If you can; give us a general idea, of where you live.. maybe other .org members in your area, can give you a referral to a good Volkswagen/German car specialist.

I think that's generally what's happening. Every time I call a new place, the first thing I ask is if they work on VWs and if yes, then a beetle. I really would love an expert on VWs in my area!

I live & work in the Newburyport, MA area, also work in Newton, MA and will be going back to school this fall in Boston. I also come from Portland, ME and still have family to visit up there as much as possible!

That's a pretty decent location range...I hope!
