We have seen this before, apparently, this engine breather hose, is failure prone and so, I would recommend, buying a new replacement part. A junkyard part, would probably be broken or really hard rubber, most likely deteriorated from age and heat.

Volkswagen Part #: 06A103217A breather tube (Looks like the latest version is: 06A103217G, note: the "G" which is a revision)

Here is a thread, where a Australian member; has the same problem and you can purchase a new part, from your local vw dealer or online, from places like ebay.

Here are some Australian based vendors; selling the part on ebay here:

I just realized, this is a old thread; that you started in the past! :) DId you never replace this hose? I seem to remember, that you did a temporary "fix" on it with zip ties and left it at that.

I hope this helps, if you have any other questions, let us know and we can go from there.

Even myself forgot my previous thread

You must have a good memory ! I can recall what I post before regarding this part. Long story short, I didn't buy the part from a local VW dealer since they asked for $120 !

I seldom drive my Beetle that is my weekend car. Now I want to try somewhere else to find the right part for her. See the attachment. It is much cheaper online than at VW dealership. I will let you know after I receive the part.

Thank you again for your replies.

Based upon the photos of the link i posted above; the hose is lomger, different then the "elbow" looking one you posted and i don't think it applies to the 1.6L engine. Let us know, how things go and if you get the right part.
