Okay so here's the problem my moms beetle is losing coolant I see no leaks. It's not coming into the passenger compartment. The oil is not milky nor does the coolant reservoir look oily. The only thing I can figure is that it is leaking into the exhaust. Would this be the head gasket? It is a 99 VW beetle with a 2.0 it has 230,000 miles.

How fast are you losing coolant?

With a head gasket you will usually get air in the cooling system. Also, steam out the exhaust even after the car is warm. A compression test will tell for sure.

That is not too fast of a leak. I'd definitely do the compression test before tearing into it. A small leak may only happen while you're moving and be hard to notice. With so many cooling system hoses there are lots of places for a leak to develop.
