Hello, I am an old school Auto tech. I am slowly learning the benefits and pains of the computer controlled world. Just bought 2005 2.0(BEV) to fix up for my daughter. Looking forward to exchanging information to help further our Beetle knowledge! Have not worked on VW since original Beetle.

Welcome to the Org, :wave2: and Welcome to the New Beetle!

I know you will find all you need here. Good luck! :)
Welcome, neighbor! I'm in Las Cruces! Start a thread on your car; we will do our best to help you with any issues you might have! :) Meanwhile, do yourself a favor; get a vw compatible scan tool, look on amazon.com for a vs450 or go factory level scan tool vcds from ross tech! A VW scanner; is pretty much required to work on these modern VWs these days! Good luck! ;)

ps; here are some free online factory manuals to look up on things to get you up to speed:

Volkswagen Workshop Manuals

Paper manual wise: the cheap haynes is ok and covers the basics; for more in depth info, get bentley paper manual, ebahn softeare based version or erwin.com subscription for vw facory level access to their manuals (one day access; you can download the manual in .pdf format).
From LA

And from LA, welcome to the greatest place on the planet, if you have a VW lol.:D
Welcome to the best, friendliest automotive forum you'll ever find. That in itself makes owning a post-1998 modern Beetle a great experience. I'm a former air-cooled driver and after switching to water-cooled Bugs, I've never looked back. From the perspective of a non-mechanic like me, the New Beetles of 1998 on are like a Lexus when compared to the old-school air-cooleds.
Thanks!

Thanks for the Welcomes! I realize I do need a quality scan tool. What tool do you guys consider the best value. I will need the most comprehensive and communicative available.
The Ross Tech VCDS; is the industry standard; it is a factory level scan tool, it is basically a clone of the factory Volkswagen diagnostic Tool they use at the Volkswagen dealerships. While not inexpensive, by many people's standards; it is an incredible tool and includes free software updates forever. If you are familiar with the standard platforms in the repair industry (e.g. snapon, OTC, Matco etc.); VCDS is a unbelievable bargain, just by the fact that you do not need to pay for updates is in itself a amazing deal!

Vcds

Billymade,

What Ross Tech product did you choose, and are you happy with that version or recommend another? Thanks!
I have the HEX-USB+CAN Interface; it is excellent! Here is a explanation of my take on VCDS and what I recommend buying; I have had VCDS for over 7 years and frankly, would not be able to fix my VW, without it!
