My 2005 2.0 New Beetle has a noisy timing belt and my mechanic wants to replace it, the water pump, etc. for $700. Can anyone tell me if this is reasonable or excessive???

Its not too far off. How many miles on the car? If its noisy, you need it done ASAP!

That price is at the low end of the spectrum. The dealer would want several hundred dollars more.

Just the parts are around $200, my brother did mine about 18 months ago in 1.5 hrs.

I paid $850 for my tdi (more complicated & much longer) @ the dealer 6 months ago. I would try a couple more places. But you are on borrowed time if you have never done the timing belt & water pump @ 8 years old.

I wish you a warm Welcome. I was quoted about $700 for the belt kit with water pump installed.
