My question pertains to a 1998 New Beetle Base Coupe with the 2.0L 8V gas engine and a 5 speed manual transmission.

I'm going to have the gear oil changed in the transmission. My car is 15 years with just 19,000 original miles. However, I am it's seventh owner and I'd be surprised if the transmission has ever been serviced. Is there also a front differential that should be serviced and does it use the same fluid grade and weight range as the tranny?

Thanks!

I used the VW OEM version of the oil, but they're all 75-90 and likely aren't much different when you get down to it, so either of those two or the OEM stuff. Whichever is least costly and available.

I asked this mobile mechanic guy if he could do transmission oil change. he said 'it's manual there is no oil' lol?

anyways, can I buy some nice quality oil from autozone and bring it to the shop?

or can I just do it at the shop and get what they carry?

I bought gear oil online from a VW specialist and brought it to my mechanic (a VW/Audi specialist) who put it in for me. I also had them install the ECS Tuning magnetic drain plugs in both the transmission and the engine. I think I'd not use that mobile mechanic. Sounds like he doesn't know much about bugs.

Sounds like he doesn't know much about cars.
Fixed that for ya.

Seriously, "mobile mechanic" sounds like an idiot. I'd steer clear.

I would buy the right stuff online, etc. We've used Redline MT90 in all of our cars and it works great. Can't remember if Autozone, etc. carries it but its worth a look.
