Last week, I heard relay clicking and the dash lights went on and off, then back on and stayed on. Now the dash lights don't turn on and neither do the fog lights. I've checked all the associated fuses plus more to make sure. I took out the relays (1 & 4), took off their covers and they all looked visually fine and didn't smell like electrical burning or anything. Any other suggestions? Or, what is the correct way to see if a relay works?

I'm sure you missed the illumination fuse. I think its located at the top of the panel, one of the small fuses...maybe.

I've busted that fuse twice, resulting in no fogs or dash lights.

Double check.

I did check it, but I double checked it and it's good.
Strange thing though. Last night the dash lights turned back on while we were driving. This morning though, they don't work again. To top it all off, I figured out this morning that the fog lights DO turn on when I turn the high beams on - completely opposite to what they should do! Does this make any sense or help more?

I had similar problem to yours. My dashboard illumination didn't work. All fuses were ok too. I changed the main lights switch and now everything works perfect. I bought the new one for ~33 $.
So check the switch.

I'm pretty sure now that it is the switch too. My sister-in-law has a beetle too, so I'll try her switch to see if it works. However, I can't find anywhere how to get it out. Is it as simple as pulling or twisting it out? I don' want to break anything. I used to think I was good at searching the forums, but I can't find anything. Any help?

OK, it's a long while later, but I thought I'd post my findings. It was the switch. I opened the switch to see if I could fix it. I probably could have, but I bought another one anyway. It looks like its guts would be able to easily make a Euro switch, but I gave up since I wasn't planning on using a Euro. Anyone made their switch into a Euro switch?
