no revs on rev counter

can anyone help out please!!!

my GF's beetles rev counter has stopped working. ive checked fuses and connections to the back of the instrument cluster but im guessing it may be at fault at the pick up... where are the revs taken from??

Do you have access to a scan tool; like VCDS? Do you have any trouble codes?
