Last night I noticed that my wife’s Beetle (35,000 miles) is making a chirping sound at idle. The noise is coming from the passenger side of the engine near the drive belts. It may be the belt tensioner, etc... but I am hoping to do a little preventative maintenance. Has anybody had a similar noise? It goes away as RPM's increase.

I am guessing you are still on the stock pullies. Sounds like not enough tension on the belt at idle or the belt has streched. When, or has, the belt been replaced?

Bad Air Conditioning Compressor

The noise ended up being a bad bearing in the AC Compressor. The dealer replaced it under warranty....:)
