I have this dream of buying a commercial property and turning it into a home. Some thing industrial and open, a blank slate. I found a building with a low price in a currently-not-that-great area. But they are about to start construction on brand new townhomes right next door to the building and the area could turn around very quickly thus raising the property value.

Has anyone on the org done this? Anyone have a "non-traditional" home?

I'm working with my brother-in-law who is an architect to design a ultra efficient home that will also produce its own energy. He likes working with concrete, so visually I've got a feeling its going to be rather non-traditional.

I have always wanted to buy an industrial brick building - build an upstairs apartment to live in and keep all my projects on the main level. The only problem is these sorts of buildings are being bought up by developers and turned into lofts (which is what my brother-in-law's day job is). So if you can get it for a good price, do it! Don't regret passing up the opportunity later.
