North Georgia Mountain Cruise

I am planning a North GA mountain cruise on August 1st. We will meet in Dahlonega GA at 10:00am and cruise over the mountains to Helen GA for lunch, shopping, tubing, or whatever. Then cruise back over the mountains to Dahlonega, and call it a day. Or hang out for dinner, Or sit around and talk cars. The route we will take would be GA Route 60 to Suches, then 180 to HWY 129, then The Richard B Russel Scenic HWY to Helen, with a stop for a photo shoot.

Looks like I don't work that weekend, so I'm game!
Val and I will probably head up Friday after work, to get into Lawrenceville and crash at Val's sister's place. Either that, or we'll be adventurous and find a hotel half way up the way, say Macon or a tad further north.

Hey...where's Michelle? :dunno:

Awesome!
My plans on getting to Helen are eating lunch first. I recommend the Bodensee Restaurant for a good German feel, but like all the restaurants in Helen, it is expensive. For the more cost conscience, Wendy's is next door. After dinner I would like to go tubing down the Chattahoochee, Anyone that doesn't want to do that can wander about all the shops in town. Tubing should only take about an hour and a half.
Another possible thing to do is to go up to Brasstown Bald which is about 20 miles north of Helen. Just a thought.

Jack/Mr. Chaotica, is a big fan of Brasston Bald- always raves about it.

BTW, Jack needs to get that TDI beetle of theirs running again.
The Trip To Helen should only take about an hour and a half. Could be more depending on how long we stop for pics. The trip back with a slight change in route will be about as long. That should give us about three hours of drive time in the hills, three or four hours to hang out in Helen. That should be enough time for anyone who wants to make just a day trip. But there is probably plenty to do or places to eat in and around Dahlonega for anyone that wants to hang out longer.
More info about where to meet in Dahlonega to come.
Mountain trip

We might be up to this. We have a camper in Hiawassee and could leave from there to Delonga and meet up with you guys. Keep us posted....:)
Al, Jack likes the bald because the road is a bout 2 miles long with a hairpin turn about every 300 yards.

I was about 1 car length behind him when me made the 1st turn and did not see him again till we got to the top. Those TDI's sure have some torque.

It is a fun ride.
I'm here Al. :) I'm down for this! We did Brasstown Bald once on the way back from ToD. It was pretty neat!
The starting point for the day will be the Chick-Fil-A. 488 Morrison Moore Pkwy E, Dahlonega, GA 30533. And it looks like Brasstown Bald is a popular idea. We can head up there after Helen. I believe there is a cost to park up there. Research commencing.
Brasstown Bald is $5 per person. You can walk the 0.6 mile very steep trail to the top or take a shuttle van.
Also, Cool River Tubing in Helen is $5 per person.
Map of the planned trip.
