Which engine are you working with (1.6L or 1.4L)? The sludge, looks like the oil was’t changed; often enough and/or not vw spec synthetic type?

There are a couple types; you can get a nee plug housing, repair wires from your vw dealer parts dept or a pigtail from online sources.

On the sai pump: there should be a plug with multiple wires, it sounds like someone may have hacked the harness and made a non stock ground (check if it works; maybe the disabled it)?

The head may have been warped; from being over heated or clogged oil passages, from the sludge and thus the cam failure?
