1998 New Beetle stalled on me about a month ago. Mechanic said he got multiple error codes and replaced the fuel pump. Ran fine for about 3 weeks. In the last week it has started stalling again.
Will start up cold, runs about 10 miles and then "sometimes" stalls again (while running at speed or at a light). Right after the stall the engine will crank but will not start. So far, after about 5-10 minutes will start again and so far has gotten me the 10 miles or so home. Check engine light comes on right after the stall. I read the codes and they are:

P1225-Injector Circuit Cylinder 1 Short to Gnd
P1226-Injector Circuit Cylinder 2 Short to Gnd
P1227-Injector Circuit Cylinder 3 Short to Gnd
P1228-Injector Circuit Cylinder 4 Short to Gnd
P1421-Secondary Air Injector Valve Short to Gnd
P1425-Tank Ventilation Valve Short to Gnd
P1451-Secondary Air Injector Short to Gnd
P1472-EVAP Control System LDP Short to Gnd

Any recommendation on how to start a diagnosis on this? I think it is consistent on the codes it throws.

Where's my 409

After reading around on the forum, I decided to look at the fuel pump relay to see it's condition as many people said it can cause the short to ground codes I saw. My 98 beetle was very early, the first week they came out. Looking at the relay panel, I expected to see a 409 relay in position 4 of the panel. Instead I see a small 167 relay which I can't find listed anywhere. Anyone run into this? Is this a fuel pump relay?

Solved - I think

It seems, with some of the very first new beetles, they used the #167 Passat fuel pump relay instead of the #409. Since the car had been running for the past 19 years on the #167, I replaced it in kind, even though all the manuals said it takes a #409. Driven it 200 miles now with no stalls or error codes. Hopefully that fixed it.
