My original issue is an over heat. When investigating, I found the coolant hose flange on the driver side of the motor was cracked, an spraying fluid when the car warmed up. I replaced that, and the ECT sensor while I had those things apart. However, still getting the overheat. I found that hen the engine warms up, no coolant is coming back through the return to the overflow bubble, which points me to the water pump needing to be replaced. I'm going to replace it, and the timing belt since it is time for that anyway. But, before I get into that I'm wondering if the circulation problem could be the thermostat. If that is stuck closed, would it prevent the coolant from going into the radiator and then back to the overflow bubble, or is there another path that would get the coolant back to the overflow bubble? I will replace the thermostat when doing the water pump/TB service, since the coolant will be drained. I'm just wondering if a stuck thermostat would prevent coolant from returning to the overflow bubble. I;m not sure if it matters in this case, but it's a 2000 2.0 Automatic. When testing, I have been careful to turn of the motor when it starts to go above normal operating temp to prevent any damage. Thanks in advance for your insight!

If there is no return flow that points to one of two things, the water pump or a plug in that little return line. What color coolant is currently in your beetle? Pink or violet? Hopefully. If someone mixed VW pink or violet with any other coolant color, then you could very well have a plug as vw coolant reacts with other coolants to form a brownish jello.

Its also a good idea to replace the thermostat when doing a timing belt with an oem thermostat. Do not buy your parts from amazon or ebay, these motors are interference engines and they need high quality parts FCP euro sells kits that include everything. You are not just replacing the belt, but the tensioner, water pump , rollers and the single use fasteners that are also needed.

Sorry for the delay in responding. My son has his car in the garage for repairs, so the Beetle has been on the back butner. It had pink coolant when I got it about 5 years ago and I have kept pink Pentosin in it since. I tried blowing into the return and got some bubbles back so that points me to the water pump. I attached a pic of the old flange that was replaced. That dark spot on the right side is where it cracked. It is a little white/crusty inside, but I don't think it is too bad. Does that look normal for a @20 year old part? Or maybe that someone in the past used the wrong coolant? I changed the radiator two summers back and refilled with pink Pentosin, so I know it does not have a mix of different kinds in it at this time.

The mineral build up looks pretty substantial, vw recommends distilled water, to mix coolant with; so, maybe normal water was used and you have hard water in your area?
