I recently put up a post -
http://newbeetle.org/forums/1-8-liter-turbo/53375-2002-dycc-vw-beetle-appraisal.html#post766227

 The system has taken two of the terms timing belt and water pump and automatically linked them to an outside entity. To me this is a form of spamming (Forum Owner supported, actually) and I don't like it. Especially in my posts as I would like to decide to whom or what I am going to give an endorsement. AS A MATTER OF FACT IT IMMEDIATELY DID IT HERE!

I've also noticed if I post in the classified, I also get a pop-up from and outside entity. Also a fairly new thing, and I equally don't like it. I "get" advertising and the need for it to exist for the sake of "free" forums, and I don't have an issue with advertising in general. I think this has gone beyond what is reasonable. I am a paying Member Sponsor, which should eliminate the pop-up thing, and the linking to certain terms is just simply, totally, unacceptable.

Is there a way to turn of this linking in my User CP? or in the posting process? I know it is a scanning of all posts by the system software that triggers this. I don't want to have to start mis-spelling or abbreviating terms to prevent this from happening.

C'mon AutoGuide, enough is enough! What's next? Selling our email addresses that we had to give to register, or the IP addresses of all visitors?

Everyone needs to comment and keep this post alive until something is done.

I'm hoping the thumbs down in the title or the mad smiley in the text will red flag the post and this will be seen by the mods and admins and get the attention of the ownership. Feel free to use the  in your post, as I'm almost sure the hreads are auto scanned for this and trigger notice. Sorry Deb if you're the one catching them, but this really pi$$es me off.

I noticed the forum automatically linked "iPhone 4s" to an Amazon link when I typed that in a post about my car.

I have noticed things like that too. Modify your post, and abbreviate them to T.B. and W.P.

Try that. I don't know any other way to do that. But, it is best to take this to admin directly.

Good luck.

I'll be glad too, give me a method! That said, however, I have always found mass public presure carries far more weight than a lone wolf!

I've always hated those sites that automatically link specific words or have something pop up if you move the mouse over them.

When do we stage the coup?

 Just keep the post bumped up on the board until we hear from AutoGuide! EVERYONE WHO READS THIS NEEDS TO LEAVE A COMMENT! Let's see what they offer. This IS a great Forum, hate to see it go south!

I have no clue what you guys are talking about, but...
Yeah!, what they said. I'm pi$$ed too.

Oh, I see what you're talking about now. I clicked on the underlined T.B. in Moravs post and figured it out.
I know, I learn slow, but I learn good;)

Click on the phrase " timing belt " right here in this post, this is a new thing. It links to an outside entity who pays our "owners" for this, every time someone clicks on the link. Everything is ALL about money!

That's only a temporary solution until someone reads through the posts and adds those into the search word database!

Views v. Replies were running almost 1:1, now in the last ten minutes, lots of views without replies. C'mon ppl, post up! Keep this right at the top of the boards.

In the immortal words of Howard Beale (Peter Finch), "I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!"

Your right that everything is about MONEY :(

But.. I don't agree the site is going to go south with this.

It's on pretty much every forum, website i use or visit. It's just one of those things that's added due to the upgrade of the software (internet) I never click on the links. Why would anyone want too. Maybe once to see why it is hotlinked, but after that who clicks to see

I support pretty much everything you do for this site, but i don't think you can single out newbeetle.org as this hotlinking is all over the web ;) :)

Edit: "Tiz the season to be Merry :) "

I'm sure, if I had a vested interest in AutoGuide or VigLink I would feel differently [not a hot link (lol)], but the lack of this kind of BS is one of the things that helped to build this Forum (from all I've read, I've only been here a little over a year). This is, without a doubt, one of the most active auto forums I belong to, and that I have seen (although there certainly may be others). Lots of good Advertisers also, without whom I understand this site could not exist. At least as a "free" one.

And I agree with you that there is not a reason to click on those "hot links", and certainly if no one does, it may go away. I just think most people don't realize they are generating a revenue for someone, that ultimately is paid for by the Consumer, EVERY time they click on one of these links. Obviously if it wasn't a revenue stream, it wouldn't exist, so apparently not everyone ignores these as you do. Geeez... Are AutoGuide's and eBay's revenues not enough already? Or is it just greed, building up a corporation even more, at OUR expense, to be able to ultimately sell for a gazillion dollars? Where does the effing greed stop? Is this not one of the reasons our world has become so effed up. Corporate and personal greed.

Sorry, just venting, not where I wanted this post to go!

As I asked in my opening post, what's next? Selling email addresses and IPs?

This is coming from an IT Specialist and Web Designer, I understand the need for these things. Pages (forums especially) are expensive to own, operate, and maintain. So I've gotten used to these types of things everywhere. However, on a page that offers paid membership, said members shouldn't have to be bothered with pop-up ads on MouseOver events or even the banner ads. I am not "Member" in that aspect so I don't mind seeing them. But MORAV shouldn't have them now that he's (she's?) paid his dues.

 I'll gladly post my comment with the AngryGuy Icon to support the cause!

Well as a new member of this forum, here's to show you how clueless I am.....

:shy:
I thought those links were done by the author of the post. I know some of the postings I've read have had intentional links (is that the proper term?) because the author is referencing a specific part or site.

So I just learned something new - and I think it's misleading that this site is putting those links out there and making it look like it's done by the author of the post. AutoGuide has already got some money from me - I purchased the iPhone app. And I'm glad to support this site (because I think it's superb) - but don't be misleading and push ads down my throat. I think that's :bs:

Thank you for your support and comments.

To the credit of the Ownership, with my Member Sponsor status, I do not deal with many of the banner adds that others on here do, and until the eBay solicitation pop-up, when I post in the classifieds, I have never had a pop-up issue.

I will be the first to admit I have very little knowledge about all things IT, but I think I understand IP addresses (if that is the correct terminology for the specific address of my computer). As regards the eBay solicitation pop-up specifically, I have been a long, long time member of the eBay Community (funny, no pop-ups there), and I know their system has my IP address. This site also has my IP address. I would think it simple to check for the existing of both and spare me a pop-up suggesting I use a site I already use.

This "hot-linking" on the other hand, could be misconstrued as an endorsement of a product or site on my part, in MY post. While the hot-links I have viewed have all been eBay, and I love eBay, and tout the benefits to many ppl, I would prefer to make that choice. This issue is specifically what really pi$$es me off!

For now, don't click on any of the auto link words. I never do, and now I know I never will. It's pretty much all you can do at this time.

This is probably the smallest forum i use. I'm used to forums where i post a thread, then have a read around, come back to the front page of that topic and my post has disappeared off onto the 3rd or 4th page.

I like this forum as it is slow and gentle without the trolls of other forums, or forums where theres more mods than members.

The sad fact of the matter is FACEBOOK is killing off forums. Forum hosts need to find that revenue from somewhere and with the addition of ad blockers, it's not coming from the ad's.

As with selling off emails and IP's, how do you think you get junk mail ;)

I agree with where your going. A little Old Lady beat Coca~Cola by herself ;)

Just can't agree that hotlinks are that annoying for me, as user :) I would be a membership sponsor if i could afford it

This is exactly what I am talking about.

And you are NOT clueless, we wake up in a new world every effing day, due to corporate and personal greed. I do put up lot's of links. Typically informational one's leading to more information on the subject at hand, for the benefit of the reader. Seldom do I endorse a Seller, unless it is to call up a "good" sale, or a Seller I have had exceptional luck with, or a seller who has something someone is looking for, etc. My biggest issue in this being done is the POSSIBLE misconception that I MIGHT endorsing the link.

I don't agree at all that facebook is killing forums. I can't go on facebook and find a how-to on something. Nor can I go there and search and find out about an issue that I'm having or anything like that. Only thing facebook lets you do is chat with others, post pictures/video and make little comments.

 I think the whole FB and whole social site thing is so controversial it probably belongs in the "Hot-Topic" forum. ;) Not going there... here...
