I want to get satellite radio. But the unit that Siriusxm sent me is not what I want to do. I would like to keep the integrity if my car’s interior.

So, I believe I have two choices.
1. Buy an aftermarket stereo that is satellite compatible with a faceplate that will fit into the dash.
2. Buy a used, newer OEM Monsoon Satellite Radio, if I can find a nice one. I am definitely wanting this solution to keep my NBC looking original as possible.

BUT…I have heard from two different sources. A local reputable stereo installer and the guy at the VW dealer parts counter. If the original stereo is not in the vehicle, it will not pass the smog test! I don’t know if that is only for an after market stereo or for any stereo that isn’t the original radio.

Yes, California is this crazy. Been here all my life and I hate living here.

I would think that as long as you can connect an OBDII reader to the car that you can use an aftermarket head unit. But often in VWs, an aftermarket unit can cause problems with the OBDII port. What year is your car?
