Rear Euro Emblem for '03 NB

8231 Views 17 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  J_Westy
Apparently, the are three different rear emblem/lock configurations. I'm installing Euro Emblems on our '03. Front emblem went just fine, BUT the rear Euro Emblem supplied has no provision for a key (double back tape attachment method). I don't mind milling down the lock casting to obtain the desired flush fitment. Losing the key access is no big deal as we never use it anyway. If there's a better way to do this, I'm all ears. Our US rear emblem has a little sliding door at the six o'clock position on the emblem for the key. The emblem is fixed, being attached by three screws that come thru the casting.
THANKS!
Bill

Your '03 doesn't have rear hatch key access. (At least, our '03 didn't, and neither does my '02  )The emblem you have with double-sided tape *should* work.

Could you post of close-up picture of your mechanism? We don't have our '03 anymore, but here is an '03 NBC. No key lock.

More Rear Emblem Info

Thanks for your post. This US '03 has a subtle little sliding door in the black area of the emblem, right between the points of the "W" (didn't even notice it when we first bought the car). Slide the little door to the left, and it reveals the lock port where the key can be inserted. The emblem does NOT move, like some of the earlier models, where it is lifted and swings out of the way.

Had it all apart last weekend. Once the old emblem (which is held on by three little phillips screws from the inside) is removed, installing the new (stick-on tape version) would leave a 3/16" gap all the way around it. SO, I need to find the PN for a different lock casting or mill mine down a bit so the new emblem will fit flush. My VW dealer is mystified - but that's not really a surprise. PICs next time it's apart.
Thks, Bill

I don't think there was a blue (euro) emblem with the key lock in the "w" as you describe. VW discontinued the blue emblems for the euro models sometime in '03 or '04. Your option would be to go back to the black emblem or make something on your own. Good luck.

ps - you could get the blue emblem without the lock piece in '03. I had them.
EURO Follow up

Thanks, Susan -
Just to clarify. The US emblem is the one with the key port.
The Euro emblem is indeed "Keyless" for flush mounting. My goal is to find the PN for the lock mechanism mount that will allow me to use the flush euro emblem. My truck lid has a semi-recessed area with a cast lock mechanism that fits through a hole in the hood (about 3 inches across). The electric actuator and its parts are mounted to a cast bracket which attaches to the lock mechanism with three torx screws.
The US emblem mounts to the lock mechanism with three phillips screws. Based on the instructions I've seen for the early NBs with the handle hidden under the emblem, and the new style, my car must be the only one on the planet with this set up. Never the less, I am determined to install the Euro emblem :)

Just yanked my rear emblem off with some needle nose pliers and slapped a 3-D badge over it with some rubber cement, NO gap at all.

Probably makes it easier to remove then! :p That flap for the keyhole was just a dumb idea anyways...

Finally...Came up with an "install" for the Euro emblem. I was beginning to wonder if we were the only ones with the elusive key flap. Simply put, I remounted the lock casting inside the trunk deck, and machined the bottom of the new emblem in three places to clear the machine screw heads to arrive at a flush fit. Thanks to all for your advice and encouragement. Yeah, the key flap was a dumb idea. With other, more convenient means of releasing the trunk lid, why bother with a key???

This is a way late addition to this thread, but my 03 doesn't have that little key door!
You don't have a vert.
I thought someone used the 1998-2002 mechanism in their '03 'Vert...

It should do that

that last picture... is it supposed to do that?
Yep, my Sept. '03/'04 model year does.
Hi. I know this is an older thread but I was looking at replacing the trunk emblem on my 2004 convertible GLS turbo. My trunk emblem has the hidden key feature. I see that billsbug used the 3D emblem on his beetle. Billsbug did your beetle trunk emblem have the hidden key feature as well? Just trying to figure out if the 3d trunk emblem would work on beetle as well.

@XAVMECH / Bill, Not sure if you're still connected to the forum, but I was wondering if you have more details on the "remounting" part. I'm embarking on the same on our new-to-us 2004 (presumable early 2004).

I only had time to loosen the torx screws, but it was late and I though I better do some google research before I screwed something up.

Regardless, thanks for the hint that it's somehow possible.
If anyone else searches for this, here are some more details.

The locking-mechanism/badge has 3 main pieces
  • diecast aluminum mechanism with lock that mounts from the outside
  • u-shaped diecast retaining bracket mounted from the inside
  • badge that's screwed to lock mechanism with 3 tiny phillips screws

Lock Mechanism with Badge removed:

So the idea after reading @XAVMECH 's hint was to mount lock and bracket together on the inside,

First, pop off the two rods, and unplug the "D" connector and pull the mating connector off the diecast u-bracket, and unscrew the 3 torx screws. This will let you take everything off.

So, I decided to drill the 5mm mounting bosses out through to the outside to use some longer button head screws

Then I found two sets of washers.
1 set just thin enough and small enough to fill in the hole and notches in the boot lid, and
1 set just big enough to catch the edge of the sheet metal and hold everything in place and not want to walk out of place.

Now, the Euro badge needed some serious dremel surgery

It still didn't set totally down in place but was really close, so I used some 3M 08011 weather strip adhesive. I tried to be light on the adhesive, but it still squeezed out, so had to recover with some 3M adhesive remover before it cured 🙃
