my car is a 2001 and has never has the manuel trans fluid changed. It has 60000km. I just wanted to know if it was a good idea to change it?

I called a VW dealer and they told me that I should never ever change my trans fluid, unless i was having trans problems. told me that VW has a "special" fluid that they use in there cars.

It is true that they have a special fluid. Three in fact. It depends on the VIN number of the car plus the transmission number which fluid gets used.
The transmission comes with a "lifetime" fluid. Only question is: Whose lifetime? I have changed the fluid every 80000 km, and am happy with the results. The metal bits and built up crud get drained, and new fresh fluid is put back in.
There are many choices as to which fluid to use. VW is about the most expensive, but it is the original fluid for the transmission. Red Line, Pennzoil, and Amsoil all make good synthetic transmission oils. Just be sure it has the MT-1 rating.
