Roof faded paint

2450 Views 11 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  scarabY2k
Hello,
I purchased a 1998 New Beetle last month for a very good price but I had to replace the clutch...
The paint of the roof is faded (and the antenna broken but I will replace it) and I don't have the money to have an auto center repainting it.
Any tips or products you know that would do a decent job?
I'll post pictures of it on my next post.

Thank you.

because it is black you could always go the diy route and plasti-dip it
I checked out plasti-dip. It doesn't look bad but it doesn,t seem to give the paint a shiny aspect.
I heard about a product called ultimate compound. If I clean, polish my roof and apply this product do you think it would work?

If the ultimate compound is anything like the back to black color restoration kits, no. Tried it first hand. It just shines your faded roof.

Plasti-dip makes a glossifier that transforms the matte finish into a nice shine. Plus it retains the Dip's peeling properties.

DipYourCar.com has lots of info on their product. you can also find information on YouTube. Just search for plasti dip.

Thank you so much!
I'll give it a try.
How many cans you think I'll need to cover my roof?
Should I make several layers of paint and gloss?

I used about 6 cans, & I think that might have been a bit overkill. haven't put on the glossifier yet, but I plan to.

dipyourcar.com actually sells a painter for the dip.

My local Walmart sells Pasti Dip products so I'll probably get it there.
I'll start with 4 cans.
How many layers should I do for a good result?
How do I protect the rest of my car? I was thinking of putting some tape around the roof (I'm a girl and I've never done anything on my previous cars, thanks daddy... Now I live abroad so I need to do it bymyself).
How long do I need to wait between 2 layers?

If you have a PepBoys, they carry a BIG assortment of "Dip"... even the glossifier.

I too masked off Cup's roof. The beauty of Dip is that it peels. You can't screw it up. Folk Dip their entire car, which isn't out of the norm these days. The funny thing is that they'll dip the WHOLE car unmasked, then go back with an exacto knife and clean up the dipped windows and tail lights:lol:. But I'm with your school of though- mask it off and make it easier in the long run.

The directions are on the can and are true to their claim- you can't go wrong kid. Make sure you watch the video on YouTube to get a little bit of inspiration.

Us BeetleBoys give you BeetleBabes BIG props for getting involved in your cars. You can do this. Can't wait to see the job. You'll be beaming with pride:banana:
