Need help. The security alarm went off when key was inserted in ignition. Now when key is turned to start engine, engine does nothing, no resistance to turning the key. Any one have an idea what is wrong. It's a 1999 GL New Beatle,, need to get running, want to sell it.

The 1999 models may be slightly different than later models, but there are problems with the door latch switches that can cause problems.

Suggest you lock the car, then unlock the car, but open the passenger door first.

You can either reach in via the passenger side of the car and try to start the car if it an automatic, or just open the drivers door then see if you can start the car.

Sounds like you could have a problem with the lock cylinder or ignition switch, though, if the key turns without the normal resistance. Does the steering wheel lock work properly?

You have to face this problem when you have problem in door latch switches or in lock sensor.Because then the security system don't get the proper response from sensor and it go off.In some car the security system is connected with car ignition system so when the alarm is off you can't start the car.
