So I go into Checker to get a rack and pinion for my 2000 turbo beetle and they ask me if I've got "variable ratio steering". I don't know what that is so I can't answer. They don't really know either so they suggest I remove the R&P, bring it it and match it. Only problem is that they have to order in the part and I would have to pay for it up front. Not knowing which fits my car means I don't know which to pay for.

How can I tell if I've got "variable ratio steering" (apparently also called "Servotronic steering" )

In case someone else is looking for this information, I made a guess that it was the non-servotronic version of the rack. I pulled it yesterday and the new one seemed to be pretty similar to the old. Put the new one in and so far it seems to be working.

BTW: It's a 2000 Beetle 1.8Turbo
